Glavans Trawl Mfg. Co.
A Biloxi Landmark
Lost to the Storm
Glavans Trawl Mfg Co. was   painted from a photograph taken in 2003 at a stop sign across the street.. Note the signature  in the lower  right hand corner is different, before I started signing with my first name only.  Unfortunately, the original photo was on file on  a computer that got stolen so I no longer have it, but I labored over the details in this work because I loved this place so much.
Glavans sold fishing nets, trawls, shrimping gear, crab traps and other  fishing gear. 'Since 1937' according to the sign over the door. I  even bought a fishing net from them a few years back.
Unfortunately Glavans was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina , and all that remains are the two trees as in my painting, and a lot of rubble.  Photo below is taken in same spot as other photo painting was made from.(painting 18x24 oil on canvas, not damaged.)
The door stoop is visible in above photo and in the painting.  Net strung out across the bricks-very depressing. I retrieved a couple of bricks(a red one and a pink one) a hook used to dip the nets,  a few pieces of the sign that was out front, and  the number '3', presumably from '1937' , since their phone number didn't have a 3 in it.  Click here for print info.
